Having your very own boat can be lots of fun. Whether you use it for fishing or for cruising, a boat is an investment that you need to take care of. One of the most important aspects in maintaining your boat is to make sure it is always clean. A boat that is not regularly cleaned will likely deteriorate not just in looks, but also in condition. This makes it very important to regularly clean your boat to maintain both its looks and condition. There are exactly two ways of cleaning your boat. The first would be to hire a professional boat cleaning company to do the job for you. Although this can be a bit pricey, if you have money to spare, this would be a great option because these professionals will likely know what they are doing. The second option would be to clean the boat yourself, or if you have mates, you can ask them to help you with your cleaning task.
Cleaning the boat yourself or with friends without the necessary equipment can be back-breaking work, especially if all you have are bucket, soap, and brush. However, things will be a bit different if you have a pressure washer unit. As mentioned above, pressure washers generate great amounts of pressure which can be very helpful when cleaning surfaces. However, this pressure can also cause damage to sensitive and delicate surfaces so you should be wary of where not to spray.
If you are going to use a pressure washer to clean your boat, make sure that all doors, windows, and port holes are closed so that no stray water gets inside the cabin. It is also important to cover any electronics and other vital electrical equipments that are installed on the deck. Make sure to remove all unnecessary items that should not get wet before commencing. Once you’re all cleared up and ready to pressure wash, start by cleaning the top going down to ensure that no dirty water gets to the already cleaned portions. If you have a telescoping wand, use it to reach elevated areas to prevent you from having to climb up and reach them. Similar to pressure washing cars, if you have a chemical dispenser, use it to dispense detergent. Once that is done, make sure to rinse the detergent and never allow it or any chemicals to sit on painted surfaces for more than 10 minutes, otherwise, they may damage or remove the shine of the paint. Once you are done rinsing, make sure that the water has drained properly from the deck.

Ask Angie: Lasting Deck Stain

I’ve found deck staining, especially a cedar deck, is a real issue with stains not lasting more than one year at a time on horizontal surfaces in almost full sun. When I looked into what to use at the “big-box” hardware stores and paint stores, they all seem to think they have the right answer. But, after 8 years of trying to deal with this, I am almost ready to give up. What do you recommend? Is there a certain type of stain, not necessarily a brand, that I should look for? What causes it to wear off so quickly? Could I be doing something wrong when I apply it? And how long should good stain last?

Whether they’re oil-based or water-based, stains will not last long on horizontal surfaces, due to weather elements like sunlight, snow, ice and rain. Wear is most commonly caused by the sun’s ultraviolet rays deteriorating the stain surface. So, if your deck sits in nearly full sun, the horizontal surface is going to fade more quickly than one in constant shade or a surface that is vertical.
Most pros recommend you restain a horizontal surface every two-to-three years. That said, properly preparing, cleaning and drying the surface before applying a stain will yield the best results for the stain to last at least that long. You want to make sure there are no traces of sealant present on the deck. A high-volume pressure washer is best to clean and prepare the surface. However, a pressure washer can easily scar the deck surface, so unless you’re experienced working with one, that job is best left to a power washing professional.
As far as the type of stain to use, a semi-transparent stain will sink deeper into the wood. Solid color stains are more like paint and will likely peel within a year. If you use a solid color stain and it starts to peel, there are really only two ways to fix it: strip it and reseal it, or keep touching it up.
For a more natural stained look, a good, heavy oil-based stain has the most longevity on a horizontal surface compared to a water-based product.
I recommend you consult with a reliable deck staining professional, who can come to your home and evaluate your deck firsthand. He or she can present the best options for getting the best looking and longest lasting finish possible.

The 7920 electric power cleaning machines are wheel-mounted for mobility and powered by a heavy-grade 3.0 HP electric motor unit. The new machines can produce water flow rates of 6.4 LPM, pressure levels to 140 bar (2030 psi) and heated cleaning to 79.4°C.

Modest Temperature Electric Pressure Washers
Daimer®’s Vapor-Flo® 7920 systems are the just the second products to be announced in the 7900 line, which includes seven other units.
